This past weekend was our Cru Leadership Retreat where we learned about the upcoming year, cast vision, and planned with each of our ministry teams. It is amazing to see the passion for God in this year's leaders, and I am so excited to see how He uses us. The theme for the weekend was Repentance, Renewal, and Rejoicing, so we talked a lot about the importance of our personal walks with the Lord and experiencing renewal and rejoicing through that. It's great to be reminded that growing in our relationship with God comes before our ministry. Even though expanding God's kingdom is a crucial part of Christianity, it is meaningless if we do so with an empty cup.
Anyway, something hit me about repentance. I was praying that God would speak to me, that He would show me what He wanted me to learn, or give me a vision for my ministry this year. I became frustrated when I just couldn't hear what He was saying or if He was even saying anything at all. Duh! One big problem: I was approaching God as a filthy sinner. I hadn't laid down my imperfections at His feet. Only then will He cleanse us from our unrighteousness and place His blanket of pure righteousness over us.
"This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus" (Romans 3:22-24).
Only then can we stand before Him and ask. So often we jump straight to what we want and forget to give God what He wants. Jesus tells us that we must repent to have eternal life.
"But unless you repent, you all too will parish" (Luke13:3b).
Over and over again, we are taught to turn away from sin, to turn away from our evil desires and not give into temptation. In Romans, Paul explains the difference of having our minds set on our sinful desires and the desires of the Spirit.
"Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of the sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are not controlled by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you" (Romans 8:5-9).
When we turn away from sin, we can see more clearly what God wants for our life.
"Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always" (Psalm 105:4).
God is loving and merciful, and He sends forgiveness through repentance. Then we can experience true renewal and rejoicing through Him.
"Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon (Isaiah 55:6-7).
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." -1 Peter 2:9

Where Did the Summer Go?
I guess it’s pretty obvious that the last 5 weeks of Summer Project were crazy busy! I feel bad that went the entire second half of project without updating my blog, but that means that I used that time to do and learn other things that I get to write about now!
When the staff left right before the fourth of July, the real project began. Not that the first half didn’t count, but looking back, a LOT more happened in the second half. We all had to step up and take a new role, whether that meant leading a Bible study or serving on a ministry team. It was SO cool to see how God could work through each and every one of us to glorify Him in so many ways.
My favorite part about the staff leaving was being able to sense the urgency that we all suddenly had. When we realized that the summer was half over, we began to step into hyper drive: taking on new responsibilities, cherishing the time we had left with each other, building relationships with our coworkers outside of work, focusing more time and energy on growing our relationship with God, and going out sharing more than ever. The last thing we wanted to do was regress and end up wasting those last 5 weeks.
Since I have so many stories that I want to share, I’ll try and wrap up my summer the best I can by sharing a little about my favorite memories: my 97-person project family, working at Chick-fil-A, and outreach on the beach.
My Project Family
Honestly, I could not have asked for a more beautiful group of people to spend my summer with. I was so unbelievably blessed with my roommates, my bible study, my impact group, my 6pack, and so many more amazing people. We grew together. When one of us was hurting, we all were hurting. When one of us was overjoyed, we all were overjoyed.
My Roommates
My Bible Study
My Impact Group
My 6pack (just 5 of the people I got closest to and spent a lot of time with towards the end of project)
We had tons of opportunities to grow closer as a group through Community events that were put on every Saturday night, like the $5 Prom, a game of Capture the Flag, a Talent Show, among many others. I, along with many of the other students, spent many evenings hanging out outside of the project office after our evening events and going on “adventures” during our free time on Fridays. I will cherish those memories forever.
Some say that Summer Project is a little taste of heaven. The community and fellowship experienced is unlike anything I will experience again here on earth. While that saddens me, it also excites me for the day that we are all reunited again in heaven! I look forward to continuing the relationships formed and, Lord-willing, seeing them all again soon!

Chick-fil-A
My job was such a blessing this summer. God placed me at Chick-fil-A for a reason, and it took me a little while to figure out what that was. Waking up at 4:30 every morning for work was hard to do with a smile on my face, but the relationships I formed were so worth it. I got to know my non-project coworkers, making an impact on their lives and them making an impact on mine, while also forming lasting friendships with my project coworkers. I learned to value sleep and was reminded what it’s like to work in a fast-paced food business. And I already miss the food! Maybe they’ll open up a restaurant around here soon!

Outreach
Sharing our faith on the beach and around the community of North Myrtle Beach was a main focus of Summer Project. In addition to going out in our free time, we had two scheduled outreach times each week: one hour with our Bible Study leaders and about two and a half hours each Sunday afternoon with the project as a whole. We were able to talk to a variety of different people of different ages, backgrounds, and beliefs and learn how to share the gospel with different approaches. We felt the urgency to spread the good news so that everyone is given a chance to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We also learned how to make evangelism a way of life and not just an activity; God called us to spread His love and glorify Him in all that we do, all the time.
As you can see, a lot happened this summer, and I would love to write more, but I could go on forever! If you have any specific questions about what I did in North Myrtle Beach, please feel free to email me at kscamann@gmail.com or comment on this blog post. You should also check out this Summer Recap Video that my friend Josh made.
I’m not exactly sure where God is leading me from here. He might be calling me to another Summer Project next summer, maybe internationally, or to join Cru staff after I graduate. As for now, UW-La Crosse is my mission field, and I am excited to be leading a Bible Study this fall and sharing His love all around the campus and the city of La Crosse!
Until next time,
God’s Blessings,
Katie

Agape
Wow! I have been so busy the past few weeks that I haven't been able to update you all on what's going on down here in North Myrtle Beach! I'm also in the process of figuring out how to use the free time that I do have more wisely, which hopefully will include writing here more often.
Last week was World Vision week, so we learned a lot about the Campus Crusade partnerships in Ghana, Australia, the Middle East, France, East Asia, and Uruguay and opportunities we have to serve all over the world by praying, giving, sending, and going. We studied the Word to see God's heart for the lost in the hope that our hearts might also break for those who don't know their Creator and Savior. The United States is 78.4% Christian, so I think it's safe to say that a very large majority of Americans at least know about Christianity and who Jesus is. But if we look at places like Thailand, which is 0.07% Christian, or Turkey, which is 0.09% Christian, chances are that a large majority of people that live there go there entire lives without even hearing the Gospel. In Matthew 28:18-20, God calls us to GO: "Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore GO and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
This week's theme is Agape, which translates to the deepest love - unconditional and self-sacrificing. Only God can express agape perfectly, although we, as Christians, should be striving to love one another with that agape love. We are focusing a lot on words of affirmation and just building one another up. It's also a week of transition as we prepare for the staff to leave on Saturday. Some students were asked to step up as leaders for the last 5 weeks, but we will ALL have to work together to continue bringing glory to God. I was asked to co-lead our Thursday Weekly Meeting Team, and I am really excited to work with the team to serve God through what goes on at our Thursday weekly meetings. It will be sad seeing the staff leave, but I can't wait to see how God works in us as we adapt to our new roles and come together as one.
Working at Chick-fil-A has been such a blessing. I love getting to know my non-project coworkers and build relationships with them as well as my project coworkers. The job is very enjoyable, apart from having to wake up at 4:30am most mornings. I am learning a lot of self-discipline in going to bed early instead of socializing... :)
I have a few more pictures so you all can SEE what I've been up to!

This is me with my friends Emily, Lauren, and Anna.

One night a group of us went to Broadway on the Beach in Myrtle Beach. It's basically a giant outdoor mall with tons of cool shops and little carnival rides and games. My friend Brooke and I decided to ride the Caterpillar ride.

I took this at the staff vs. students softball game that we played at the end of All for One week. It was really fun coming together as a team and cheering one another on.

This is my impact group. We gave mom a gift for her birthday and dad a gift for Fathers' Day. They love us :)

This is my Bible Study at our last study with our discipler Jocelyn. It will be very sad to see her go :(

My impact group/family decided to take family photos - this is one of my favorites. Classic.

All For One
Well hello there! It's been awhile since I've written. I think the busy schedule is finally starting to catch up with me; although I am getting the hang of balancing work and project activities with socializing, personal quiet time, and sleep.
This week's theme is All For One, so we are focusing a lot on Christian community and combining all of our strengths for one common goal, which is to glorify God. I also think the staff wants to test us and make sure we can handle being by ourselves and working with one another for when they leave in a few weeks. We've specifically been learning how important it is to communicate and help one another out. We need to both encourage and challenge one another in our faith and work to solve problems that may arise, such as conflict.
I've seen God work in so many ways through the other students on project and the people we talk to on the beach. One cool story is actually about one of my roommates. One day on the beach, she talked to a girl who was going through a really tough time in her life. As she was walking back to our apartments, the girl's grandparents stopped her and thanked her for talking to their granddaughter. They had been praying for someone to come and talk to her. The grandparents even called Campus Crusade headquarters to express their thanks. It's just so encouraging to know that God DOES have us here for a reason. And He already knows who we will be talking to on the beach or at work or even right next door to where we live.
There's not much left for me to write about. Hopefully next time, I'll have more pictures!
Until then, please continue to be praying for everyone here, that we would be fully relying on the Holy Spirit to work through us to impact the lives of everyone down here in North Myrtle Beach.

Killing the Giants
Each week, we have a different theme, and this week's theme is Killing the Giants. The idea is for us to really step out in our faith and trust God with big evangelism goals. We also want to encourage one another to "kill our giants" or face any specific fears we may have. Sharing on the beach can be really scary and exhausting, but it is SO worth it. Dusty, one of the staff members, gave a talk on Sunday night about the reality of eternal death and how important it is for us to get out there and share the gospel with the lost. Please be praying for us this week as we rely on the Holy Spirit to fill us and guide us.
It's hard to believe that exactly two weeks ago I was leaving Neenah to start the trip down to North Myrtle Beach! These past two weeks have gone so fast, but I've already seen God move so much!
After the first day of the job hunt, I got a job working at Chick-fil-A! Eight other project students and myself started there last Tuesday, and I really like it! My shifts range from starting at 9am to starting at 5:30am... guess I'll have to get used to going to bed early!
It's so amazing how many friendships have formed... only two weeks in, and we are already a family! I've gotten really close with my roommates, the girls in my bible study, the people I work with, and many others. Another group that I am so blessed to be a part of is my impact group. Everyone is split up into impact groups, which consist of about 5 girls, 4 guys, and 2-3 staff. My impact group named ourself Family Carlson after our "mom and dad" (aka staff members), Ryan and Jenna Carlson. It has been so great getting to know one another and participating in various activities like an Iron Chef competition and a photo scavenger hunt. Honestly, I can't wait to see how God works through all the friendships already formed on the project because we still have nine weeks left to grow closer!
Now, time for PICTURES!!!

Chandra and I on the beach right when we got to NMB

These are my BEAUTIFUL roommates!! (Liz, Chandra, Bethany, Erica, Me, and Jess)

Dana and me... people tell us we look alike :)

A big group of us went to Applebees one night for half-off appetizers. This is Lauren, Will, Thor, and me.

Yes, I busted out the Kan-Jam... couldn't go a summer without it.

This is my family!!! (Anna, Lauren, Geoff, Tiffany, Josh, me, Jenna, Will, Katie, Alex, and Ryan)

These are the wonderful women in my Bible Study (Jocelyn-our discipler, me, Brooke, Tiffany, Rachel and Kelsey).

I'M HERE!!!
After a long, 22-hour car ride, I arrived in North Myrtle Beach around noon yesterday. I drove down with Will, who also goes to UW-La Crosse, and Chandra, who goes to UW-Eau Claire. We made it through the night without stopping (with MUCH help from coffee and energy drinks), even though each of us got about 3 hours of sleep and had a super fun time getting to know one another on the way down. Plus, we drove through the Smokey Mountains just as the sun was rising... such a beautiful sight to see.
Yesterday, I was able to meet a bunch of new people including 4 of my roommates (the 5th is actually Chandra, who I drove down with!!). They are all absolutely wonderful! The heat was a bit of a shocker, but all I need to do is remember to load on the sunscreen, drink a TON of water, and try to cool off in the AC as much as possible. We had a cookout last night for everyone on the project, and it was great to get to know even more people... but there are SO MANY of us here - 97 students plus about 30 staff!
This morning, we started right away with breakfast and our first meeting, spent some time in the Word, and spent a few hours sharing our faith on the beach (which we will be doing a lot of this summer)! I shared with a girl named Kelsey, and we had 3 really great conversations with a Christian mother and her two teenage daughters (very encouraging!), three 14-year-olds who are starting high school in the fall, and a young woman who definitely needed to hear the Gospel. After dinner, we were able to meet with our bible study groups and talk about our spiritual backgrounds. I was seriously blessed with such a wonderful group of five other women. I am so excited to grow with them this summer!!!
Tomorrow, we have another morning meeting and then job hunting in the afternoon!!!
Prayer requests:
1. That God would work in the hearts of the people we talked with today on the beach
2. That God would provide jobs for everyone as we search the next few days
3. That God would continue to work in and through us as we continue our first week here

What Will I Be Doing This Summer?
I've had a few people ask me what exactly I'll be doing this summer, so I thought I would outline the list that was given by the Project staff:
-Solid teaching from the scriptures
-Rich times of prayer
-Opportunities for small group interaction
-Getting an increased vision for the world
-Outstanding training in ministry philosophy and skills
-Leadership training
-Weekly outreaches
-Rich fun times as a family in Christ
-Men’s and women’s development times
-Practical training in communicating your faith
-Many opportunities for Evangelism
-Personal discipleship with personal attention from your staff developer
-Character growth
-Spiritual disciplines of solitude, silence and reflection on scripture.
-Fun--we live only a block from the beach!
I hope that gives you all a better idea of what I'll be doing. Honestly, I don't know exactly what to expect, but I am so excited to see what God has in store!
As I prepare to leave tomorrow (some are already leaving today), I ask that you pray for safe travels for everyone heading down to NMB over the next few days.

3 days!!!!
…Until I leave for North Myrtle Beach!! And 4 days until I get to meet the wonderful students and staff that I will be spending my summer with!
I have raised about 95% of my support for the summer. Praise God! I am so blessed to have such loving people in my life! THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who has trusted the Lord to give to me either financially or through prayer… I cannot do this without you!!!
I hope to update this blog throughout the summer so the everyone can see what God is doing in my life and the lives of those in North Myrtle Beach. I will also include various prayer requests to give you an opportunity to be actively involved in the NMB ministry from miles away.
Prayer Requests:
1. That God would prepare the hearts and minds of me and my fellow project students as we pack our bags and travel (safely) down to NMB
2. That God would guide and shape us during the first few weeks as we find jobs and follow our calling to GO

New Beginnings
It’s a bittersweet time—finishing my Sophomore year of college and moving away from my friends to begin a summer filled with new and exciting experiences. As hard as it is to say goodbye to everyone I love here in La Crosse, I can’t help but look forward to this summer. It’s time for me to break off from the things I know a little too well, challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone, and let God take complete control. As I embark on this adventure, I am trusting fully on the Holy Spirit to guide me, give me an eternal perspective, and keep my eyes focused on the reason behind it all.
